In modern football, performance analysis is no longer reserved for the elite. However, the democratization of football trackers raises a legitimate question for strength and conditioning coaches and demanding players: how reliable is the measured data really?

To answer this question scientifically and transparently, Footbar's R&D team conducted a thorough validation study at the end of 2025 at the KNVB campus (Netherlands Football Federation). In partnership with Inmotio, a leader in Local Positioning Systems (LPS) for elite sports, we subjected our algorithm to a battery of rigorous tests.

The following detailed results propel Footbar among the most reliable technologies on the market today.

🔬 A Methodology Based on FIFA Protocols

To ensure objectivity and scientific validity, the testing protocol was developed based on the FIFA certification manual for Electronic Performance and Tracking Systems (EPTS).

The study involved 8 U23 players. For a direct comparison, each participant was simultaneously equipped with:

  • The Footbar tracker, placed on the upper posterior calf of the dominant leg.

  • The Inmotio LPM reference system, worn on the torso, renowned for its high spatial precision.

  • Synchronized video tracking for manual verification of technical events, such as shots and passes.

Players performed multi-pace circuits, 40-meter maximal sprint tests, high-intensity small-sided games (4v4), and specific shooting drills.

📊 Key Results: Precision Powering Performance

The collected data demonstrates the excellence of the Footbar algorithm, capable of isolating complex football movements with accuracy rivaling professional equipment.

  • 📏 98.5% Accuracy on Total Distance in Match Conditions: During the small-sided possession drill (4v4), which perfectly simulates the chaotic conditions and direction changes of a real match, the mean distance difference between the Inmotio reference system and the Footbar tracker was only 1.47%. This attests to over 98.5% accuracy for overall player movement on the pitch.

  • ⚡️ 96% Accuracy on Maximum Speed (V-Max): Top speed is a crucial metric for injury prevention and explosiveness analysis. In the 40m sprint tests, the Footbar tracker showed high consistency with the Inmotio system, with a mean bias of only 3.3%.

  • 🎯 93% Accuracy on Shot Detection (F1-Score): Technical detection is Footbar’s signature. During shooting drills, the AI successfully isolated and classified shots with an F1-score of 0.93, combining high recall and precision. The system perfectly identified specific shot impacts, effectively distinguishing them from simple passes.

  • The Accelerometer Advantage: Unlike GPS systems that can "drift" and record distance while you are stationary, the Footbar tracker uses an accelerometer that directly detects leg movement. As a result, it is often more accurate than professional systems at identifying periods of immobility.

💡 Technological Excellence Without Compromising Accessibility

This level of reliability is the result of continuous optimization by our Research & Development team. Improvements to our deep learning models, specifically recurrent neural network architectures, allow us to translate raw accelerometer signals into high-fidelity, actionable statistics.

Today, Footbar’s core mission is accomplished: democratizing access to advanced performance analysis for amateur football. We are proud to offer the only technology combining a certified level of reliability against demanding standards with a price accessible to all players and clubs, from amateur to professional.
